Creative Career Conversations

An evening of inspiring conversation

On a warm June evening, St Hilda’s Youth Space and onRedchurch launched the first of a series of Creative Careers Conversations.

Aimed at local young people aged 14-19, the series will see a host of presenters from local creative companies give career advice and expert hints and tips on breaking into their respective industries.

The launch event welcomed Tabitha Stapley, Founder of Social Streets, a not-for-profit news and media company; Dominic Husbands, Marketing Director, Composer and Consultant at Pitch & Sync; and James Little, Managing Director of Screen Talent Agency (who was stuck at home due to the national rail strike but was kind enough to join us via zoom!).

The St Hilda’s Girl’s Group were fully engaged and came prepared with a raft of insightful questions that, in turn, sparked a lively conversation. One thing the experts could all agree on: every aspect of the creative industry would greatly benefit from making more effort to seek out young, local talent.

It’s all about how good you are. It doesn’t matter who you are, what or where you studied or who your mum and dad are. If you work hard you’ll go far.
— James Little, Screen Talent Agency

The old ‘how am I supposed to get experience if even intern positions require experience’ dilemma was discussed at length, and the group were encouraged to take matters into their own hands. The advice was clear: having a portfolio of work you’ve created yourself showcases your creativity and, more crucially, your initiative.

Forging collaborations was another great idea. Often, the best group of contacts young people can foster is each other. By coming together, projects can be created and networks formed that might well see you through your entire career.

This was a great bunch of young women who all deserve equal opportunity in our media and creative industries. Recruiting from the local area is one of our key missions to deliver social and economic impact to the community we serve so thank you St Hilda’s and onRedchurch for making it easier!
